When you leave scooters, cones, etc. in the middle of the sidewalk, you keep disabled people from being able to safely access the sidewalk. Whether they be wheelchair users, cane users, etc. Electric scooters are very popular, they’re great to use for transportation, but you’ve got to remember to leave them off to the side. Do not leave them in the middle of the sidewalk. If you’re unable to move objects yourself for whatever reason, give your Mayor’s office a call. Video Description: Rikki with

As a deaf person and hearing aid user, it is important that I (and others) have easy access to hearing aid batteries. In a society that really pushes them, this is important. I haven’t had to buy a lot of new batteries myself because I’ve been gifted most of mine, but when I had to make a last minute run to Walgreens because all of my batteries were dead and I have no more new ones, I figured out that I couldn’t get into the packaging. So now how am I supposed to switch out my batteries and make

Being deaf means you're prone to not being able to hear all the important things especially if you use hearing aids but you're not currently wearing them. And then you once again forgot to turn off the water and you don't hear it running 💀 I feel like it's the yearly membership payment at this point to do this. 🤣 So... who else has this happened to? Video Description: Rikki with no makeup on, hair down. She is in the bathroom, staring blankly before looking at the camera. Text says, “I did th

I learned when I was denied access from the Capitol. I learned when I gave so many Senators an accessibility and disability rights packet for The People’s Day and all the information went ignored. I learned when I emailed organizations and was fought with or ignored. I learned when a Facebook group tried to attack me for asking for accessibility, telling me I needed to “play my role” when I already did beforehand and they ignored it, twice. I learned when I asked organizations and politicians wh

Fingers, hands, and arms are important to Deaf people who use sign language to communicate. When your body parts become injured, it definitely can make it more difficult to communicate. I’ve got carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and I’ve gotten a wrist tattoo that made it a pain in the butt (or hands, if we want to be literal about it) to sign for two weeks. But an arm injury? Damn, that one hurts. Video Description: Rikki, a young white woman with long curly brown hair, wearing a grey and bla

Yes, deaf people can listen to music… Through extremely loud volume. Through hearing aids. Through cochlear implants. Through Bluetooth. Through SoundShirts and similar technology. Through vibrations. Through sign language. Through closed captions. Media has always tried to act like deafness is zero and nothing else, but in fact, that’s not true. Deafness is a spectrum. And even for those that do have absolutely no hearing whatsoever, they can still enjoy music in a variety of ways. And this is

“We don’t have interpreters because we don’t make the money back.” “We don’t have interpreters because deaf people don’t come to our events.” If you then decide to finally hire ASL interpreters, you need to let people know that there are ASL interpreters! Us deaf people are so used to 99% of events not having ASL interpreters that we’re going to assume yours doesn’t too. If you want deaf people to show up and expect ROI, you need to make a line in your promotional marketing materials that says t

Recently, I testified in support of LB1056 on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Nebraska. The Disability & Behavioral Health team supported the right to choice of interpreter and covering costs and employers insurance covering (or at least helping to) cover the costs of assistive devices and mobility aids if they break at work. These are all important things to consider when it comes to access needs for Deaf and disabled people. Video Description: Rikki in a hearing room at the Capitol tes
